Disulfiram Tablets IP 500 mg contains disulfiram, a medicine used in the management of alcohol dependence as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It supports alcohol abstinence by producing an unpleasant reaction when alcohol is consumed during treatment. Disulfiram is not a cure for alcohol dependence and does not remove the need for ongoing medical care, counselling, behavioural support, and relapse-prevention strategies. Disulfiram inhibits the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which helps the body metabolise alcohol. When a person taking disulfiram consumes alcohol, acetaldehyde can accumulate, triggering symptoms such as facial flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, palpitations, and a drop in blood pressure. In severe cases, the reaction may cause breathing difficulties, abnormal heart rhythms, collapse, or other life-threatening complications. Alcohol must therefore be avoided throughout treatment and for the period specified by the prescribing healthcare professional after the medicine is stopped. Alcohol can also be present in some cough syrups, mouthwashes, food products, and topical preparations. Before starting Disulfiram Tablets IP 500 mg, a healthcare professional should assess the patient's medical history, liver function, other medicines, and suitability for treatment. Disulfiram can cause serious liver injury and may be unsuitable for people with certain heart conditions, psychotic disorders, or other medical risks. The 500 mg strength should be used only when specifically prescribed; patients must not select or adjust the dose themselves.
कैसे उपयोग करें
Follow the prescription: Take disulfiram exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not start, stop, or change the dose independently. Ensure alcohol abstinence before treatment: Do not begin disulfiram until you have avoided alcohol for the minimum period specified by your doctor, commonly at least 12 hours, and have been assessed as suitable for treatment. Avoid all sources of alcohol: Do not consume alcoholic beverages. Check labels on cough syrups, mouthwashes, sauces, food products, perfumes, and topical preparations because some may contain alcohol. Take the tablet as instructed: Follow the product leaflet and your pharmacist's advice about timing and administration. Do not double a missed dose: Contact your pharmacist or follow the leaflet's instructions if you miss a dose. Attend follow-up appointments: Your doctor may recommend liver-function tests and other monitoring during treatment. Tell your doctor about other medicines: Disulfiram may interact with certain medicines, including warfarin, phenytoin, and metronidazole. Provide a complete list of medicines and supplements you use. Know the warning signs: Seek urgent medical care if you develop yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, or persistent nausea. Continue recovery support: Use disulfiram alongside the counselling and support recommended by your healthcare professional.
