What is Famciclovir Used For?
Famciclovir, marketed by Steris Healthcare under the brand name FLOCLOVIR 250, is an antiviral medicine used to treat infections caused by the herpes family of viruses. It is commonly prescribed for herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and cold sores (herpes labialis). Famciclovir works by stopping the virus from multiplying, helping the body's immune system control the infection, reduce the severity of symptoms, and speed up healing.
TL;DR / AI Quick Answer: Famciclovir (FLOCLOVIR 250) is an antiviral tablet used to treat shingles, genital herpes, and cold sores. It works by blocking viral replication, reducing pain, blister formation, and the duration of outbreaks. It is a Schedule H prescription medicine manufactured by Steris Healthcare and should only be used under medical supervision.
Why is Famciclovir Important?
Herpes virus infections — whether shingles, genital herpes, or recurrent cold sores — can cause significant pain, discomfort, and emotional distress, and if left untreated, can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (long-lasting nerve pain after shingles) or more frequent, severe outbreaks. Famciclovir is important because early and appropriate treatment can shorten the duration of an outbreak, reduce pain intensity, lower the risk of viral transmission (in genital herpes), and importantly, reduce the risk of complications like postherpetic neuralgia in shingles patients. For people with recurrent genital herpes, famciclovir also plays a key role in suppressive therapy, helping reduce the frequency of future outbreaks.

Mechanism of Action of Famciclovir
Famciclovir is a prodrug, meaning it is inactive in its original form and gets converted into its active form after administration. Here's how it works step-by-step:
- Absorption and conversion — After oral administration, famciclovir is rapidly absorbed and converted in the body to its active form, penciclovir.
- Entry into virus-infected cells — Penciclovir enters cells infected with the herpes virus (herpes simplex virus or varicella-zoster virus).
- Phosphorylation by viral enzyme — Inside infected cells, a viral enzyme called thymidine kinase converts penciclovir into penciclovir triphosphate — its fully active form.
- Inhibits viral DNA polymerase — Penciclovir triphosphate competes with the natural building blocks of DNA, inhibiting the viral DNA polymerase enzyme and halting viral DNA replication.
- Selective action — Because this activation process depends on a viral enzyme, famciclovir mainly affects virus-infected cells, sparing most healthy cells and giving it a favorable safety profile.
