Medicine information
Uses & overview
Cyclosporine is a prescription immunosuppressant medicine that reduces the activity of certain immune cells. It is widely used to help prevent organ rejection following kidney, liver, or heart transplantation. Depending on the formulation and approved indication, cyclosporine may also be prescribed for selected autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including certain severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and eye inflammation. Cyclosporine works by inhibiting calcineurin, a protein involved in activating T lymphocytes. This reduces the production of immune signaling substances that contribute to immune system activity. By controlling these responses, the medicine can help protect transplanted organs and manage specific conditions in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues.
How to use
Follow your prescription: Take the exact dose recommended by your healthcare professional. Never adjust the dose or stop treatment independently. Maintain consistent timing: Take each dose at the same times every day to maintain consistent medicine levels in your body. Follow food instructions: Take cyclosporine consistently in relation to meals, following the instructions for your specific formulation. Use the correct formulation: Cyclosporine products may differ in absorption. Do not switch brands, capsules, or oral solutions without approval from your doctor or pharmacist. Handle oral solutions correctly: If prescribed a liquid formulation, measure each dose using the supplied device and follow the manufacturer's preparation instructions. Avoid grapefruit: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase cyclosporine levels and the risk of side effects. Avoid them unless your specialist advises otherwise. Check medicine interactions: Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements before starting treatment. Attend regular monitoring: Your healthcare professional may check cyclosporine blood levels, kidney function, liver function, blood pressure, and electrolytes.
