Medicine information
Uses & overview
Leflunomide 10 mg is an oral prescription medicine belonging to the disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) class. It is primarily used to manage active rheumatoid arthritis by helping control the abnormal immune response responsible for persistent joint inflammation. Unlike medicines intended only for short-term pain relief, leflunomide works as a disease-modifying treatment and may help reduce inflammation, joint swelling, stiffness, and other symptoms associated with inflammatory arthritis when used regularly under medical supervision. The active ingredient, leflunomide, is converted in the body to an active metabolite that inhibits an enzyme involved in pyrimidine synthesis. This limits the proliferation of certain activated lymphocytes and helps reduce the excessive immune activity associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Because its effects develop over time, Leflunomide 10 mg should be taken consistently and should not be stopped or adjusted without medical advice. Leflunomide requires medical monitoring because it can affect the liver, blood cells, and immune system. Doctors may recommend blood tests before treatment and periodically during therapy to monitor liver enzymes and blood counts. Patients should inform their healthcare professional about existing liver disease, kidney problems, infections, blood disorders, immune-system conditions, or other medicines they are taking. Leflunomide can cause serious harm to an unborn baby and is generally contraindicated during pregnancy. Women who could become pregnant should discuss reliable pregnancy-prevention requirements with their healthcare professional before starting treatment. A specific drug-elimination procedure may be required after stopping leflunomide because its active metabolite can remain in the body for a prolonged period. Leflunomide 10 mg is therefore not a medicine for self-treatment of joint pain. Its appropriate dose, treatment duration, monitoring schedule, and suitability depend on the patient's medical condition and response to therapy. If prescribed by a doctor, patients should follow the treatment plan carefully and attend recommended follow-up appointments.
How to use
Take Leflunomide 10 mg exactly according to the prescribed dose and schedule. Do not increase, decrease, or discontinue the medicine without medical advice. Swallow the tablet with sufficient water. Do not crush, chew, or alter the tablet unless your pharmacist or doctor specifically instructs you to do so. Leflunomide may generally be taken with or without food. Try to take it at approximately the same time each day to maintain a consistent routine. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses together to compensate for a missed dose. Leflunomide is intended for regular disease-modifying treatment rather than immediate relief of occasional joint pain. Improvement may take time. Attend scheduled medical appointments and laboratory tests recommended by your doctor. Liver-function tests and blood counts may be required during treatment. Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use because leflunomide may interact with other treatments. Avoid starting or stopping other medicines without professional advice while taking Leflunomide 10 mg. Women who can become pregnant should follow their doctor's pregnancy-prevention instructions carefully because leflunomide can cause serious fetal harm. If pregnancy occurs or is suspected while taking leflunomide, contact your healthcare professional immediately. Do not donate blood during treatment and for the period recommended by your healthcare professional after stopping leflunomide. Seek medical attention if you develop signs of serious infection, unusual bleeding, severe skin reactions, persistent cough, breathing difficulties, or symptoms suggesting liver problems. Never share Leflunomide 10 mg with another person, even if they have similar arthritis symptoms. Keep the medicine stored according to the product label and out of reach of children.
