Medicine information
Uses & overview
Linezolid 600 mg IP is a prescription antibacterial medicine belonging to the oxazolidinone class. It is used to treat selected bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive organisms. Depending on the diagnosis and approved product information, it may be prescribed for certain types of pneumonia and complicated skin or soft-tissue infections, including infections caused by resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Linezolid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which prevents susceptible bacteria from producing proteins necessary for their growth. The appropriate use, dose, and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, the patient's medical history, laboratory findings, and clinical response. It is not a treatment for viral illnesses such as influenza or the common cold. Linezolid can cause important adverse effects, including low blood cell counts, nerve-related problems during prolonged treatment, and potentially serious interactions with certain antidepressants and other medicines. Your healthcare professional may recommend blood tests and other monitoring during treatment. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, previous antibiotic allergies, high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use Linezolid only as prescribed, and seek medical advice promptly if severe diarrhoea, unusual bruising, vision changes, or other concerning symptoms develop.
How to use
Use only with a prescription: Take Linezolid 600 mg IP only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional for an appropriate bacterial infection. Follow the prescribed dose: The dose and duration depend on the infection, its severity, and your individual health status. Take it as directed: Follow your prescription and product leaflet regarding administration with or without food. Swallow the tablet: Take the tablet with water unless your healthcare professional provides different instructions. Maintain regular intervals: Take each dose at the recommended times to maintain consistent medicine levels. Complete treatment as prescribed: Do not stop early, extend treatment, or change the dose without consulting your doctor. Handle missed doses carefully: Follow your pharmacist's advice or the product leaflet. Do not double the next dose to compensate for a missed dose. Check for medicine interactions: Inform your doctor about antidepressants, opioid medicines, decongestants, and other prescription or nonprescription products. Attend recommended monitoring: Your doctor may arrange blood tests, particularly during prolonged treatment or if you have additional risk factors. Monitor side effects: Seek prompt medical advice for unusual bruising, severe diarrhoea, vision changes, numbness, or tingling.
