Medicine information
Uses & overview
Modafinil 200 mg is a wakefulness-promoting prescription medicine used to improve wakefulness in adults with certain sleep-related disorders. Depending on the diagnosis and local prescribing guidance, it may be prescribed for excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea, or shift work sleep disorder. In people with obstructive sleep apnoea, modafinil does not treat the underlying airway obstruction and should not replace prescribed treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Modafinil affects brain systems involved in wakefulness, although its complete mechanism of action is not fully understood. The appropriate dose and timing depend on the condition being treated, individual response, other medicines, and medical history. It is not intended to replace sufficient sleep or to be used without medical assessment for studying, general tiredness, or routine productivity enhancement. Possible side effects include headache, nausea, nervousness, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, and reduced appetite. Modafinil can also cause serious skin reactions, psychiatric symptoms, and allergic reactions in rare cases. Stop taking it and seek urgent medical attention if you develop a severe rash, blistering, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. Inform your doctor about heart problems, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, or a history of psychiatric illness.
How to use
Use only with a prescription: Take Modafinil 200 mg only if prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional for a diagnosed sleep-related condition. Follow the prescribed schedule: The timing depends on the condition being treated. For narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnoea, it is commonly taken in the morning; for shift work sleep disorder, it may be prescribed approximately one hour before the work shift begins. Do not change the dose yourself: Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition, response, other medicines, and medical history. Food instructions: Modafinil can generally be taken with or without food, but follow the instructions supplied with your particular product. If you miss a dose: Follow your medicine leaflet or ask your pharmacist. Avoid taking a missed dose close to bedtime because it may interfere with sleep. Do not use it as a substitute for sleep: Maintain an appropriate sleep schedule and follow treatment recommendations for your underlying sleep disorder. Review other medicines: Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, supplements, and hormonal contraceptives because modafinil can cause clinically important interactions. Monitor side effects: Report persistent headaches, anxiety, insomnia, mood changes, or palpitations. Seek urgent help for a severe rash or allergic reaction.
