Medicine information
Uses & overview
Pimavanserin is a prescription medicine used to treat hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson's disease psychosis in eligible adult patients. It belongs to a group of medicines that act on serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT2A receptor. Its mechanism differs from many traditional antipsychotic medicines because it does not primarily work by blocking dopamine receptors, which is an important consideration for patients with Parkinson's disease. Pimavanserin may help reduce distressing psychotic symptoms, including seeing or believing things that are not present. The medicine does not cure Parkinson's disease, and treatment response varies between individuals. A qualified healthcare professional should assess the patient's diagnosis, other medicines, heart health, and overall medical condition before prescribing treatment.
