Medicine information
Uses & overview
Tofacitinib Tablets (5 mg) contain tofacitinib, an oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor used to manage selected inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It works by interfering with JAK signalling pathways that help regulate immune responses and inflammation. By modifying these pathways, tofacitinib can help reduce disease activity in eligible patients when prescribed for an approved indication. Depending on the product approval and local prescribing guidelines, tofacitinib may be used for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Its suitability depends on the diagnosis, disease severity, previous treatment response, other medicines, and the patient's medical history. It is not appropriate for every inflammatory condition and should be initiated and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional. Tofacitinib can increase the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis and opportunistic infections. It may also cause changes in blood cell counts, liver enzymes, and cholesterol levels. Important warnings include an increased risk of major cardiovascular events, blood clots, certain cancers, and death in some patient groups, particularly people with specific risk factors. Your doctor may recommend screening for tuberculosis and viral hepatitis, blood tests, vaccination review, and regular monitoring during treatment. Before starting tofacitinib, inform your doctor about any current or recent infections, previous tuberculosis, cancer history, smoking, heart disease, blood clots, liver or kidney problems, and all medicines or supplements you take. Live vaccines should generally be avoided during treatment unless a specialist specifically advises otherwise. Do not combine tofacitinib with other immunosuppressive medicines or biologic therapies unless your specialist explicitly determines that the combination is appropriate.
How to use
Take Tofacitinib Tablets 5 mg exactly as prescribed by your specialist or qualified healthcare professional. Swallow the tablet with water. Follow the product leaflet if you need specific instructions about taking it with food. Take each dose at the prescribed time and follow the schedule provided by your doctor. Do not increase, decrease, or discontinue your dose independently, even if your symptoms improve or return. If you miss a dose, follow your prescription instructions or ask your pharmacist for advice. Do not take a double dose to compensate. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use, particularly immunosuppressants, biologic therapies, and medicines that may affect tofacitinib levels. Complete recommended tuberculosis and hepatitis screening and attend blood tests as directed to monitor blood counts, liver function, and cholesterol. Inform your healthcare professional if you develop an infection, fever, persistent cough, painful skin rash, or unusual fatigue during treatment. Discuss vaccinations with your doctor before starting therapy. Live vaccines are generally avoided while taking tofacitinib. Seek urgent medical attention for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, one-sided leg swelling, severe abdominal pain, or signs of a serious infection. Store the tablets according to the manufacturer's instructions and keep them out of the reach of children. Use this medicine only for the prescribed condition and do not share it with another person.
