Uses & overview
Telmisartan is a widely prescribed medicine used to manage high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It belongs to the angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) class of medicines. Telmisartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels. This helps blood vessels relax, allowing blood to flow more easily and lowering blood pressure. Maintaining healthy blood pressure can reduce the risk of serious complications, including stroke, heart attack, and certain forms of cardiovascular and kidney damage. In selected patients, Telmisartan may also be prescribed to reduce cardiovascular risk, depending on their medical history and individual risk factors. Telmisartan is available in different strengths, and the appropriate dose depends on your blood pressure readings, medical history, kidney and liver function, and other medicines you take. Possible side effects include dizziness, low blood pressure, and changes in kidney function or potassium levels. It is not recommended during pregnancy because it can harm the developing baby.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dosage: Take the dose recommended by your healthcare professional. Do not increase, reduce, or stop the medicine without medical advice, even if your blood pressure improves. Take it at the same time daily: Telmisartan is generally taken once daily. Taking it consistently helps maintain blood pressure control throughout the day. Take it with or without food: Telmisartan tablets can generally be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water and follow the instructions provided with your specific product. Manage missed doses carefully: If you miss a dose, follow your medication leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed tablet. Monitor your blood pressure: Check your blood pressure regularly as advised by your doctor and maintain a record of your readings to assess treatment effectiveness. Inform your doctor about other medicines: Tell your healthcare professional if you take potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, diuretics, lithium, or other blood pressure medicines because interactions may occur. Recognize possible side effects: Dizziness or light-headedness may occur, especially when starting treatment. Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions. Seek urgent medical care if you experience facial or throat swelling or difficulty breathing. Attend follow-up appointments: Your doctor may monitor kidney function and potassium levels during treatment, particularly if you have kidney disease or take other medicines affecting potassium.
