Medicine information
Uses & overview
Sodium Valproate and Valproic Acid are prescription medicines that affect chemical signaling in the brain and help stabilize abnormal electrical activity. They are primarily used to treat certain types of epilepsy and prevent seizures. Depending on the specific formulation and approved indication, valproate may also be prescribed for bipolar disorder and migraine prevention. These medicines increase the availability of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical messenger that helps regulate brain activity. By reducing excessive electrical activity, they can help control seizures and support symptom management in selected patients. The appropriate formulation, dosage, and duration of treatment depend on the patient's diagnosis, age, medical history, and response to therapy.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dosage: Take only the dose recommended by your healthcare professional. Never increase, reduce, or change the dose independently. Take it at the recommended times: Follow your prescribed daily schedule. Taking the medicine consistently helps maintain stable medication levels and supports treatment effectiveness. Follow food instructions: Take the medicine with or without food according to your product instructions. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach discomfort for some people. Swallow the formulation correctly: Swallow tablets as directed. Do not crush or chew enteric-coated, delayed-release, or extended-release products unless your pharmacist confirms that doing so is appropriate. Handle missed doses carefully: Follow the patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist what to do. Take a missed dose when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Never double the dose. Do not stop suddenly: Stopping valproate abruptly may trigger seizures or worsen your condition. If treatment needs to change, your doctor will advise how to do so safely. Attend recommended blood tests: Your doctor may monitor liver function, blood counts, and other parameters to identify possible complications early.
